I am doing most of my breathing
through the mouth. When you simply drop your jaw a bit, the air will naturally
rush in (if your diaphragm is open), so it is much quicker than breathing
through the nose, and will fill up your lungs. I will sometimes breathe through
the nose for very small, short breaths, when there is no time for opening the
mouth. So, in a sense, you use both, but mostly it should be through the
mouth.

when I take in big breaths, I
usually breathe through both. However, the mouth takes in most of the air.

there's five solutions I know of
when you're playing alone: 1. play the piece faster 2. learn to take really
fast breaths - and don't be afraid to cut some of those long notes short (but
get the downbeats 3. pretend there is a grand pause somewhere 4. leave out a
couple of notes (NOT the downbeats) and breathe there 5. learn circular
breathing

Try playing the piece slower at
first, when practicing alone, and when doing this, find places where a breath is
convinient. Also, work on your breathing, breath in deep and fast. Before
playing that part of the piece, take a HUGE breath, then find time to take
smaller breaths in between notes. You'll get used to it, start slow and work it
up to speed, everything will be wonderful! -Abby

breathing through the mouse is fine,
just don't breath through the rat. Aren't I a [] [] []
[] [] Both seems to be the common answer although most air comes
in through the mouse, I mean mouth with the nose suplementing. Many people are
mouth breathers or have sinus problems and only use the mouse. Not sure how
anyone could play only using the nose but some claim they do.[:p] [:p]

Very interesting tip. I do have a
question. I have been listening to a lot of flute recordings lately, and it
seems as if I am noticing a different techique oher than tonguing or slurring.
Can you help me identify how I can obtain that exclusive sound. Thanks.

Hello! I am Lizzie and I am 15 years
old and I have been playing the flute for 4/5 years now! For breathing, DO NOT
lift your shoulders up. Relax your shoulders and take a deep breath. You should
be able to carry on with that breath for atleast 4 measures. If you can't,
don't worry just practice! I hope I have helped! If you need any more help just
post a message! ~randomflutist[:)]
