What a great way of expressing this. Although I'm not self-taught, but conservatory-trained, I am in many ways like you now re: the flute (I'm an attorney now). I continue to play mostly for the reasons you state here.
Hi rai , very well expressed , I agree with every word.. but I'd like to add on , if I may , that when it comes to creativity , age may be advantageous to creativity , dont you think so..?
I am 28 years old (I look much younger thank the good lord!) and i've been playing for 17 years (started in 6th grade). I've been married for 5 years and I have two toddler boys (2 1/2 and 4). I do some local gig work for community theatre and some local charities in the Palm Beach area (wine tastings and the American Cancer Society are the most recent) but mostly i'm a stay at home mom.
i'm only 14 but i love the flute so much.i've only been playing for 3 years but i'm the 1st chair flute in symphonic band in my school.i tried doubleing on the sax but i would never want to practice it because i liked the flute so much more.lol.i'm alos in my school's jazz band and i love proving to people that flutes can b in jazz.just recently i met a professionaljazz flute player.it was pretty cool.
I'm 17, I've been playing for 5 years....I'm one of 4 flutes in my high school band
(we have 4 flutes, one clarinet, one saxaphone, two trumpets, one tuba, ane baratone, 4 trombones and one lowly percussionist....How sad is that?)

I'm 27. I've been playing the flute since I was 11. I play in a flute ensemble with my friends from wind band, we do weddings, dinners, fairs etc. I've always played in wind bands ever since I started, and I'm a bit of a fanatic about the things My favourite wind band recording is North Texas Symphonic Winds playing the Holst Suite in Eb, and my favourite flute recording is Peter Lloyd playing the Gaubert Sonata.
I dabble in piccolo too, but I can't vouch for my upper octave wanderings
