flute maintanance

Post by nix »

Hi,
Could anyone recommend a good book on flute repair. I fancy buying an old flute and learning how it all works, but need some guidance. Ideally a book or guide I would beable to get in the UK.
Thanks

Flute Repair Book

A great one to start with is "The Complete Guide To The Flute And Piccolo"
by James Phelan for $35.00 at www.flutemaker.com. Get it!!!! It's the bible on mechanics and repair. I'm reading it now. Absolutely fascinating.

The best way to learn how a flute works is from a tech or a flute maker. The book Mattyacht mentioned is good (though I'm not sure I would call it the bible of flute repair), but there's no substitute for live instruction, particularly if you intend to do more than pull a flute apart to see how it works, and then put it back together.

you could probably contact Burkart & Phelan [the flute manufacturer's webpage] and purchase it through them. Even though they are located in the Boston area, you could probably pay with a credit card or a bank wire transfer, or perhaps a cashiers check. I am sure that if you were willing to pay shipping to the U.K. that they would send you a copy.
