I believe Fluteguy's version of the story is correct. It's the one I've heard from every teacher I've had over quite a few years. But I don't think the ending details of the story are all that important to playing this piece. It's a nice thing to know this type of background; however, IMO, it's certainly not essential. What is more important, to me at least, is taking guidance from the composer and paying attention to what s/he has written for us. If we get too wrapped up in story depictions and background material, it makes it more likely that we will ignore those things -- as people have generally done when performing Syrinx.

Very good point about the interp. part. While my professor only told the story once, and has helped me learn the piece by paying attention to what debussy actually wrote, I still like to keep the story in mind to help instill certain subtleties.sidekicker wrote:I believe Fluteguy's version of the story is correct. As for my version of the story... I dont claim that I am an expert on Myths, but this is merely what I heard.
another way to intererpt it is to just think of a sad time in your life... play a measure then write about it and just continue... from what I've heard it really works.
i'm only on measure 22 right now with that D:
(I should probably get a different avitar... with my hair all messy and the the way the lighting is I guess people start to think I'm a girl )

I'm SO sorry! I am usually pretty good at gender recognition...
My deepest apologies. I understand where you are coming from, and have had the same thing done to me on MANY occasions in the past. [All I will say publicly *although feel free to ask in a PM* is that a medical condition in the past resulted in a not so masculine physique, and I had to have surgery to correct the issue that was actually catagorized as a handicap].
I'm Sorry..... I've fixed my post.
