It is a "broken" chord whose notes are played
individually. For example: For the key of Bb Bb D F D Bb HTH, Kim

Arpeggio is the chord that goes with each scale and
should be in any practice book you look in from beginner on. It is taught and
played following the scale. In fact here when someone says play this scale, they
mean play the scale and its accompanying arpeggio. Maybe you just don't think
of it by its name because it is taught pretty early in beginning band and you
probably will recognize it when you look it up in a practice book.[:)]

Hi~ I found this definition in one of my daughters
books..... Arpeggios are chords played one note at a time. All chords can be
expressed (or played) as an arpeggio. Thereby arpeggios function musically as a
chord. HTH, Kim

Hi~ I found another definition for you that I hope
will help you visualize. arpeggio- Broken chord in which the individual tones
are sounded one after another instead of simultaneously.

days you catch the bus and other days it runs over you.

Ok I was bored tonight and found another tip for
you...besides my daughter has to know all 12 major scales and arpeggio's by
memory played at 120 next week and I was a little curious to understand what she
was doing LOL arpeggio (broken chord 1st 3rd & 5th notes of the scale). If you
look at my first reply this may make sense a bit more ? Kim

Oh, and by the way, 'Kim', what is your daughter
memorizing all that for? Is she trying out for something? I have to memorize all
major scales, the Chromatic scale, and a piece for and ensemble audition..
*shudders at the thought* Well, thanks again... [;)]

It seems that different teachers/schools put different
emphasis on different things. While many require that you memorize your scales,
others like my daughter's require that you memorize your arpeggios along with
your scales. LOL I didn't even know what an arpeggio was until my daughter was
memorizing them. Kim

Though I always have practiced arpeggios (I like the
way they sound lol) we haven't started using them with out scales in band until
this year. In fact I just had a test on two octaves of the Eb scale and arpeggio

Scales practice almost always include the arpeggio and
most testing requires both and many flute practice books include them. Basic
stuff you learn your first couple months of playing.
