Allegretto speed in 3/8???? Boehm Caprice # 11

Post by joolz »

I am playing Boehm Caprice # 11 and having some trouble working out how fast I should be playing it. It says Allegretto which in theory is 100bpm only this is in 3/8 and since the whole thing is in semi quavers with some demi semi's in there, crotchet = 100 would be WAY too fast. Am I to suppose then that it is actually quaver = 100? That seems to slow.

Anyone who has played it or is playing it - could you help me out on this one??

My duration conversions are a bit weak, but semi quavers are the equivalent of 16th notes, and demi semis are the equivalent of 32nd's, right?

Assuming this is accurate, I would assume that you are supposed to be counting the eighth, rather than the dotted quarter (forgive me for using American durations), so in this case, if you wanted to play at 100 BPM, it would be eighth=100. Keep in mind, however, that markings like "Allegretto" do not equate to any specific number of BPM. You can use them to get a general idea of the tempo, but let the music dictate how fast it should be played. If you feel eighth=100 is too slow, speed it up a bit. There is no set rule for how fast these things have to be played.

yes sorry, I'm a dope - I meant :
is it dotted crotchet (quarter) = 100 (which would be very fast) or is it quaver (eighth note) = 100. I'm counting this one in quavers (eighths ) at the moment. The piece is made up of semiquavers (16ths) and demi semi quavers (32nds) in amongst at some places.

Does that make more sense now? I can't believe I did that. I think that it is most likely eighth note = 100 which is about what you said. I guess I'm up to speed then. I know it is all up to the player but I just wanted to know if I had WAY more work to do or if I can "see the top" so to speak.

Thanks again for your helpful advice. (off to revise basic maths!)
