Finding the value of the flute
I am renting a flute from my local music store. I was wondering if there's a website where I can check the history of the flute. Also is the serial number on the top of the body under the name brand? Also, does the serial number have letters in it mine does, I think?
I play:
Piano
Organ
Clarinet
Flute
Recorder
Penny Whistle
Harmonica
Jaw Harp
Cello
Violin
Guitar
Mandolin
Ukulele

Yep.

However, most of the foreign makers don't give out serial number lists like the American makers do, so you won't find Yamaha for example.
Serial numbers can have both letters and numbers.

Keep in mind though, that serial numbers are usually 6-8 digits long. Most companies put the model number [which commonly has letters in it] below the brand name.
A common place for serial numbers, is above the tenon that goes into the foot joint, just below the rings on the barrel of the flute, and under the mechanism.

Gemeinhardt is a very well known flute company located in the US (Indiana to be exact). Go to www.gemeinhardt.com. I have been told that their serial number system doe snot really tell you much, but it is pretty easy to at least get a decade based on the model number.
