I was a flute performance major at my local university back in 2000. I was considered well above average as a flautist, excelling everywhere I went. I passed my auditions into the school of music with no problems, and did well. Half way through my 2nd semester my car engine died (exploded really), and I was left w/ no choice but to withdraw from school as I could not get to class (the bus routes in my area are non-existent so it wasn't an option). I left on good terms w/ the flute professor, but she's a bit of a hard nose. Very hard to read, very reserved, very stoic if that makes sense.
Well, here I am 8 years later ready to go back and try again (now living in the area after mine and my husband's military services ended). We've been back 4 years, and I've had 2 children in that time. My youngest will be 2.5 come fall, and I am finally in a position to heed my husband's push to go back and try to finish this time. In the past 16 months I've almost completed my AA in Criminal Justice online, so I've been working hard academically.
But I'm worried about re-auditioning (yes, I have to...I double checked). I'm worried that b/c of my age, and being "old" (LOL...I'm 25, will be 26 come fall...but would be a 26 yr old freshman as far as music is concerned, a Jr. as far as the University is concerned) that I won't stand out enough to get back in. I have until the end of March (when I audition) to prepare, and I'm worried about scales and such. I've continued to play over the years, but nothing formal.
So, does anyone have any advice for an "old lady" going back to school to try again?

Do it anyway! There is a girl in my studio who was an undergrad at a different university, and got her degree in political sciences. She gave Law school a try, couldn't stick it out, and decided to come here to be an undergrad music ed major. She is 26.
She is doing fine. She was rusty when she started back last semester, but over the past year, she had greatly improved.
Don't worry about it!

your making me feel old
I've just picked my flute up again and I'll be celebrating my 33rd birthday in April. Once I've completed my next exam I'm considering going back to Uni externally to obtain a Diploma in Music Teaching. So no I don't think your old. How you stand out will be with your exceptional playing skills not your age, and in my case the growing amount of grey hairs appearing these days
