"Gr" Flute?

Post by Scrolfe »

I just got a book of a handful of orchestra excerpts for the flute and I had a question for some of the parts these pieces have. On some 2-4 flute part symphonies and etc. some of the parts are labeled "Flute 1 Flute 2 Alto Flute" and etc., while some are called "Gr. Flute 1." Does anyone know what it means by Gr? If I'm not explaining enough just ask. Thanks

Usually this means "grosse Flote", which means "big flute" in German. This refers to the standard C flute, as opposed to the "kleine Flote" (the piccolo). If you see Kl. Flote or something like that, it refers to piccolo.[/code]
