I know that it is important to play test; however, what should beginners do?
After all, don't most beginners just use whatever their middle school gives them or their local store gives them to rent? How can a beginner play test if they are still working on their fundamental sound, etc. ? I'm just now learning and about to buy my first flute, but I can't judge my own playing when I play test these instruments at a convention I'm going to next week, can I? I'll have my flute friend there to help guide me, but are there any more suggestions you guys would give?

Take another flutist with you who is more advanced. Go around from booth to booth, looking at flutes in your price range. Test play them [just give them a whirl, you will know whether you like it or not]. If you like the way a flute plays, and it is in your price range, have the other player give it a try, and get their opinion on whether or not it is a decent flute.
It doesn't have to be to that specific player's taste, but it just has to be a solidly built flute.
