College searching begins any ideas?

Post by Flute_star3 »

I'm starting to look at colleges that have a good music program an excellent flute teacher and happen to offer Japanese as a minor. Do you have any suggestions? It's hard to tell who is a good flute teacher from their bio.
Thanks.

You might look at North Texas, it seems that they have a minor in Japanese
available. :)

Flute.. looks like a full house..

The only one I know anything about it Mary Karen Clardy, who is apparently
quite good with both flutes and students.
Of course, that is hearsay, but I trust my son's woodwind teacher, who knows her.

Good luck in your search.

I would suppose that any decent college-- with a music program-- would have sufficient support in terms of quality teaching staff for each instrument. The Japanese minor should not be hard to come by, as it is a fairly common language. Be glad that you're not trying to double major in Therapeutic Neuroscience and Zulu. (Although I'm not quite certain that Therapeutic Neuroscience even exists...) Good luck finding a school you like.

Thanks, I have added UNT to my college list. Any other suggestions?

Nina Perlove teaches flute at Northern Kentucky University and the school offers two years of Japanese languages courses, but I'm not sure if it's available as a minor...

I just checked NKU's website, and they do indeed have a Japanese minor available there. But, if you looked at KY schools, you would also need to look at the University of Louisville, University of Ky [some really great players have come out of there], and Eastern Kentucky University. All three of these schools are at the same caliber in quality and just have different areas of music that they emphasize. UofL and NKU emphasize Music Performance, and UK and EKU emphasize Music Education. But, there is a trade off. If you go to a more Performance geared school, you will have more competition and a more difficult time establishing a great performance resume.
