My school's concert band as well as jazz band, jazz combo and piccolo in Marching Band. I also take jobs, gigs, and contests as they come up.

I like mine


4)What flute players do you enjoy listening to?
I like Ian Anderson's jazz style and James Galway for classical.


5) What is your favorite type of music to play or favorite piece you have ever played?
I like all kinds - classical, jazz, celtic, etc. I don't think I can name a favorite piece. As for band music, I like October, Festive Overture, Stars and Stripes Forever, etc. I like just busting out some improv in jazz band too.

What group do you play for? None. I just started playing again 6 months ago.

What is your favorite type of music to play or favorite piece you have ever played? I like classical, I would like to try some latin jazz. I used to play Carneval of Venice. I am trying to work my way up there again. I am working on Mozart Flute Concerto in G.

prokofiev's romeo and juliet is a lot of fun, but I'd have to say le merle noir

I don't truly understand the fascination with Galway; while he certainly has a beautiful tone and whatnot, I have performed in concert with him, and found him to be a very disagreeable, grumpy little man who, when he didn't get his own way, LITERALLY went into a corner and sulked. He was supposed to be giving the flautists there masterclass, but was too grumpy to do so, and so his wife, instead, did some work with us - which wasn't quite the same....

Can't say much good about the man from my experiences with him!

I don't know anything about Mr. Galway's temperament, but I do find his playing -- for the most part -- rather boring. Everything is played with the same big wide vibrato, hardly any colour changes, and particular emphasis on technique. I know these are his "trademarks", but I personally don't find it to be a highly impressive addition to the world of music. Also, having gone to several performances of his, it's rather obvious that his recordings are over-mastered for my tastes; i.e., his sound is not nearly as big as it sounds on his recordings, like it's been greatly enhanced.

Just my opinions. I know many will differ. I just prefer flutists who can vary their playing style much more and produce a wide variety of tone colours, and I personally don't think Galway does that very successfully.

I find his technique very impressing, and his sound overall. But, on the other hand, I do agree. He doesn't use a wide variety of tone colors or vibrato speeds/widths. And, while his sound is quite nice I think, it is too bright for my taste.

He is still worth listening to though, and I have quite a few recordings of his that I particularly enjoy. He is not however my favorite flutist. My favorite flutists at the moment are: Christina Jennings and Carol Wincenc.

Christina Jennings is terrific. She lived in the same town I do for a while and I was able to hear her play several times. Her live performances were exquisite. There was nothing I did not like about her playing.

I just hope she is as good as a teacher as she is a player. Tone-wise and stylistically she is in the same "vein" of flute playing as I am. So, there is a definite reason I will be auditioning for her for Graduate School.

Haven't played for a group in years just playing for fun and to get through my music exams currently studying grade 6 Trinity College London

For now -> Sankyo ETUDE inline with NEL had it for 10 years
Soon a new instrument......

Well remember that recordings don't always give the most accurate view of one's real playing because good sound engineering can do wonders . However, since I've heard her live more than once I can tell you that she really does sound like that. I thought she was incredible.

I remember hearing that she was also very good in the pedagogy department. The flute studio at Boulder right now is really crackling with great players.

Unless you are referring to a wood or Grenaditte flute, I think for most of the experienced players here, that would qualify as a nightmare flute rather than a dream flute. Just slightly more desireable than a purple or pink flute...
