So what kind of damage will occur?

Left in the interior or in the trunk? Trunk temperatures won't get as hot as the interior.
For wooden flutes or piccolos, summer heat inside a car could cause the wood to crack.
For a metal flute, the risk is much lower. If a metal flute is left inside a car where summer heat and direct sunlight can cause the temperatures to soar, probably the worst that could happen is that for pads installed with heat glue (the trill keys and the C key), the glue could soften and cause the pads to shift and leak. If that were to happen, most likely a tech could easily reseat them. Even this is a very remote possibility. Heat glues vary in the melting temperature, but most are well above 150 degrees. It's unlikely that the temperature in the car reached high enough to do any damage unless the car was parked for hours in the desert at high noon.

"Never give a flute player a screwdriver."
