Testing a new flute
When you're trying out a new flute before you buy it what playing routines does everyone use in the shop? Do we all like to keep it simple with a scale or are we actually too embarrassed to have a go in the shop at all?

I try and play them for as long as I can. If I can get them on trial and play for a couple of days that is the best.
I start with scales.
Check the tuning with a tuner.
Play long tones with dynamics.
Maybe a couple of songs.
Practice different techniques.
If I am in the shop, I get the flute specialst to listen and give some of his/her opinions on tone and intonation. It is sometimes good to have a second set of ears.
I have decided that the next time I want to buy a flute, I am going to get one on trial from flute world or some other flute shop.
That is easier for me to do because I live in the US. I don't know how many flute shops there are for you in the UK.
Good luck.

I too play as much as possible. I like to play scales in all octaves (to get a feel for the flute) than play a few pieces that I am familiar with: slow/fast, dynamic contrasts, different styles & articulations, etc. I prefer to try them in my home when possible. The last flute I purchased was with me for several weeks before I had to finalize the deal, but that is not always a possibility.
For my students, I try to prepare them before hand with things to play and listen for. I also give them cards to take notes on each flute and give feedback when I am there as to what I hear.
