Need Piccolo Advice

Post by kmshesko »

I've been playing piccolo for about 6-7 years. I currently own a geimenhardt silver piccolo which was beat up during high school and needs some repair and I have an off brand with cork pads for marching band.

I am going to be playing for concert band and I kinda want to get a new piccolo. I have always had my heart set on a wooden one, but since I have a limited budget (around $1000 - $1500 if that ) I'm thinking maybe a nice plastic would do well.

My dilema, should I just fix up my geimenhardt (I've heard the silver aren't as good for concert band), invest in a wooden one, or buy a plastic one?

Any suggestions and opinions are greatly appreciated.

Check out one of these

Pearl PFP105E Piccolo

You can get one of these for $1000. It is an excellent piccolo!

Meow! Sounds like a cat fight!

::hiss::

j/k

The Pearl IS nice, I haven't tried the other one. You could also look into used wooden piccs. Also "demo" or "showroom" models are usually discounted as well. For that, I would recommend taking a look at a couple of the Yamaha wooden piccs. Used, they usually come in at $1000 or less.

I did find a few used wood pics between $1000 and $1500, so they are out there. Both the Yamaha or the Burkart are good pics.

LOL

I did not mean to start a disagreement....lol One of the main reasons I suggested the Pearl over some of the others is it fills 2 gaps.

1. The price gap.
2. You get a wood sound with composote durability.

It also has a pretty forgiving headjoint for a person who is in transition form a metal one.

I did use the phrase "Check out one of these" not "you must get this one"

Cut me some slack folks! .lol

Phineas,
If it is any consolation, I like the Pearl piccolo as well. :) Besides, the last time I checked, the Trevor James was double the price.

Well, I ended up purchasing and Phelan and Burkhart. It was a little bit more than my budget, but my parents decided to chip in a little as an early birthday gift so I could get it. I have 10 days to try it out, but so far I like it.

What do you think of this brand? Everything I saw online said it was pretty good...

WOW, that is a big change in your budget! Which model did you get? Is it new? That is a good playing piccolo.

If I would have known you had a budget like that, I would have suggested the Ironwood Emerson Boston Legacy!...(FLAME ON ET!...lol)

I got the global model.

It was originally $2600, but I got it for $1800 brand new.

Good! Just be patient with the headjoint. Wood headjoints may take some practice to get use to, especially playing through the entire range of the Pic.

Other than that, you made a good choice!

Ah. That IS a good picc. I remember liking it when I tried it. I just couldn't get my sound to be as clean and pure as I like it to be.
