college auditions

Post by livinlife63 »

next year im planning on auditioning to mostly conservatories and I was just wondering what everyone thought would be a really good and challenging audition piece. i know i have to do a mozart concerto and probably a bach sonata but then in addition you have to play 2 contrasting pieces (for most schools annyway, i know they all differ but yeah)
so i was just wondering what would be some good pieces to play for auditions!

I would also have a romantic era piece ready, and a contemporary concerto ready [if possible]. I would also have scales and several orchestral excerpts ready as well. You never know what they might ask for on the drop of a hat. Make sure you are familiar with their application process. Most conservatories require a pre-screening round that is often done by a taped audition. The trick to these is to have your pre-screening repetoire recorded professionally.

The Dutilleux and Sancan are good. But the conservatories you are applying to should also have an impact on what you play [or rather, how you play].

If you are auditioning for a top notch conservatory [Curtis, Eastman, Juilliard, etc. ], I would look more into the Ibert Concerto, Nielsen Concerto and the like. But if regardless of what you play and who you play for, you have to be stunning; spotless technique and well developed musicality are already expected [especially at the top tier conservatories].

It wouldn't hurt to do something by memory either...

When I take my auditions for Graduate schools [will be auditioning in the winter of 2010-2011], I will be playing: Bach Sonata in B minor, Mozart D Major Concerto, a French/Romantic Era piece, Michael Colquhoun's "Charanga" and Andre Jolivet's "Chant de Linos" [with a few orchestral excerpts as well]. But, keep in mind that this is my audition repetoire for a MASTER'S Degree program, so the level of expected playing is higher. I have a prospective list of Grad schools that I will be applying to. If you would like to know what they are, send me a message.
