Intermediate Flautist Looking for a Step-Up

Post by cr4zy.p3rs0n »

I've been playing flute for about four years and my flute teacher is encouraging me to purchase an intermediate flute. I've been looking around and know what qualities I would like the flute to have (silver head-joint, open hole, off-set G, low Bflat footjoint), but I'm not sure what brand to buy.
In the next few weeks I'm going to the local music store to try out some new flute, and I was wondering what brands I should stay away from and what brands I should pay attention to?
Help? Anyone?

First, find the "Frequently Asked Questions" thread in the "general hangout" section. It is at the top because it has been made into a "sticky." It will answer a LOT of the questions you have.

Generally, I just recommend that you look at your budget, and then the instruments. When you get the instruments, try to find a flute with a handcut headjoint. It really yields a much better instrument. You could also look into getting a used/lower end handmade flute which is a FAR superior instrument. Craftmanship ALWAYS takes precedence over metal material.
