Piccolo and pads

Post by Lily »

Pads - Can I change pads by myself? Just a ponder, I don't really know that much about flutes.

Piccolo - the colored ones, do they really smell bad? I have heard they smell weird.

Also, since I am here, I only take flute lessons in the winter. So, I was kind of thinking if it would be smart learning something from fluteland?
Another thing, would you reccommend playing on piccolo as well, just for fun?
Is the fingering for piccolos much different from a normal flute?

-Thank you

Unless you are a trained tech, you should never attempt to replace pads. It is a very precise and complicated process and not nearly as easy as it seems.

The colored piccolos, though I do not know how they smell, are not known to be of very good quality. If you are thinking about buying one, I do not recommend it. Look for a name brand piccolo. In the long run, you will have fewer problems, same as the flute.

Playing piccolo is fun! I recommend that all of my students learn to play. However, keep in mind that though they are similar instruments, proper technique is quite different. You are much better off to seek some help, at least initially. The fingerings are similar (though there are some alternate fingerings some players prefer).

The more you know about your instrument, the better prepared you will be. that does not mean it will make you a better player as that comes with practice and instruction, but it will certainly better prepare you to be a good player.

Well, I was just thinking of getting a cheap one, to try and see. Since I live in Iceland I can't really go to a store and try. (I live in the country, they don't even have a music store here, and I am not even sure if they have piccolos in the city).
But I am really grateful for your answer, it was very helpful :)
