Same fingerings?

Post by SkylineWhisperer »

Hi! I'm new to playing the flute and I'm teaching myself because I can't afford a teacher, and it's been fine until now, where I've got a little confused. It's probably really stupid or simple, but hopefully someone could explain it for me please!
I just don't understand how to make a low E become middle E when they have the same fingerings. I wondered if they're just supposed to sound the same, but that can't be right? Then I figured it was to do with the amount of air, using a harsher blow to make it higher? Only I can't get it still. My book has no info on the types of notes, only fingering.
Thanks for taking the time out to read this :D !

Blow the same way, but make the hole between your lips smaller. At a certain point you'll increase the air pressure enough to "overblow" into the second octave E.

Thank you so much! I thought it was to do with the embouchure, but I'm still focusing on my tone more than anything, so I didn't want to mess with what I had yet!! Now I know that's how you do it, I'll try harder. Thank you.
