Pearl Quantz 665, 765 or Dolce?
hi there, this is actually my first post after going through this great forum. I am an amateur flutist, picking up the flute after 10 years not playing and feel I should step up and buy a better flute. Now I know and have read all previous posts about which brand/type is better etc. but would really appreciate your thoughts on the following. I started out with an old Grassi flute when I was a student and have used Jupiter, Deford, Gemeinhardt flutes, and now have a Hernals (anybody know this brand?). Although the Hernals is still a nice flute I am thinking about upgrading to either Pearl 665, 765 or Dolce. Can anybody tell me if the extra money for an all silver flute (765) is worth it? In other words is an all silver flute better than just a silver head? Is the 765 better in any other way? Also, would a Dolce be a better instrument than the 765 since this is not an all silver flute. I am still to try out these flutes but welcome any feedback before I do.
Hey anybody else on this forum from New Zealand?

Welcome!
A Pearl would certainly be a step up from what you have. All of the models you listed are great flutes (many of my students have played Pearls over the years).
In my opinion (keep in mind that this is only my opinion), the extra money for solid silver is not really worth it. The 665 is a good, sturdy flute with a lot of capability for a hobbyist. As for the Dolce, I am not sure about the newer models but in the past more handmade workmanship went into these flutes. The headjoint is also quite different. I have really liked the Dolces that I have played, but again, I really like the 665 and 765.
With all of that said, I would highly recommend trying them all before making a decision. If there is a significant difference, then you have answered your question. In the end, you will be the one who has to play it and you should be satisfied.

Re: Pearl Quantz 665, 765 or Dolce?
With Pearl flutes, it is all aobut the features and the headjoint. The 665 Quantz is a great flute. I bought one because it had the best projection for the price. The only thing I would have gained by going up to the Quantz Coda model that mattered was the D# roller and a C#roller.(Which i really like!) However, it was not a deal stopper. All of the Pearl headjoints will fit the 665, so you can always upgrade it later. The Dolce model has the Forza headjoint which many people prefer.wimm wrote:hi there, this is actually my first post after going through this great forum. All in all, you will just have to play on them(like I did!) to see which one you like the best. Hang out for a while, and JoeB the Pearl flute rep may chime in on this thread. May be he can give you further advice.
Welcome to the board.

Thanks so much, yes I will definitely try them out first. I will also check out the different headjoints. I have to stay within a certain budget though, and as the Dolce is a bit more I will look out for a 2nd hand, or do you think new will (always) be better? Another brand I really like is Sankyo. Years ago I tried the Etude with silver head and that sounded great! One of the reasons that I'm keen on trying Pearl is because I heard great things about the pinless mechanism. Does it mean it needs less servicing? Thanks again.
Didn't Pearl flutes have a sale on a while back think someone mentioned the 40th Anniversary model was quite nice too.
I'm sure someone from Pearl flutes is a member on here and they would give you a good price direct wish I could remember who it was, use to have them on my facebook but lost all my contacts when it was updated.

That would be awesome. Have a look at this site: http://www.ozwinds.com.au/product_info. ... cts_id=235 That looks like a pretty good deal. Also listed is a Dolce for a wee bit more. It's an Aussie site so you need to change the currency. For what I've seen here in NZ those prices are quite competitive. Anyone heard of this site? I am a bit cautious with buying online though, I rather walk out a store with my brand new flute under my arm...nasxxx wrote:I'm sure someone from Pearl flutes is a member on here and they would give you a good price direct wish I could remember who it was, use to have them on my facebook but lost all my contacts when it was updated.
The big differences between the models mentioned- namely 665/765 and Dolce is as Phineas mentioned-the Forza headjoint. 505-765 all have the same stock student cut. Dolce and Elegante have the Forza AND the keywork is much more robust. Accessories are different too. Dolce and Elegante come with a rather nice wood case.
The Anniversary model, besides having special engraving and presentation, is the same flute as the 665 and 765 with the standard options from the Coda models- Solid 10K lip plate, C# trill, and a D# roller. Unlike the regular 665/765 coda modelsstudent head, anniversary models also come with the Forza headjoint.
Also, Pearl as the distributor, does not sell directly to the public. You have to purchase one of our flutes through one of our dealers.
Also as Phineas mentioned, Just about all of our headjoints will fit on all our flutes. We do have people who buy the lower end flute and buy a separate Pro Headjoint from our Japanese flutes. That suits many people quite well as the basic pinless mechanism design and scale is the same on all our flutes.
Also, depending on where you are in the world...Pearl has various distributors for various parts of the globe. Dealers fall under the jurisdiction of the appropriate distributor. Pearl Corporation here in the US where I am, distributes for US and Canada..

Thanks guys! I just bought a 2nd hand Pearl Elegante 785RBE, almost new! I had the Quantz 665 at home to try it out for a week, and was thinking about buying it when I stumbled on this one. Although the 665 had a great sound, the Elegante is miles apart. It sounds so delicate and it plays so easy and light, I'm so happy with this flute, can't recommend it more!
I think the 785 is an older model, they don't sell it anymore (only 765 and 795), but I guess the 785 is a similar make as the 795? Does anyone know?
About the headjoint, not sure, it is the PHN-8, but I never heard of it before. Is it the same as Forza?

The 785 was discontinued in 2004. It was the export version of the 775 model from Japan. This was the handmade Elegante and was moved after 2004 to Taiwan production, The current 795 Elegante.wimm wrote:

The Headjoint PHN-8 is known as the Vivo headjoint and is the same cut that Janos Balint plays that we developed for him.
So you've got a pretty nice Handmade flute from Japan.
