Flute Sale Suspicion

Post by flutepower »

Hey,
I and my friend are planning to buy one of the flutes on this page.
These cheep and unbelievable sale discounts are disturbing me though.
Can any one tell me if these flutes would or would not be a good buy?
It is hard to believe these cheep discounts, and as I have been tricked
before, I want to be certain.
I really want a good quality flute that has a foot C and is not exceeding the price of $385. Pour on the advice, PLEASE!!! :D

Take a look at this site,
Thanks so much,

I'd recommend buying new intermediate flute from my recent experiences with eBay flutes.
viewtopic.php?t=4152

I just bought Artley open holed flute (with probably silver head joint, if not even silver main tube and foot) for less than $100.
Now, it's a used one and it may require some servicing.

I also bought NEW Gemeinhardt M3 open hole (but only with C-foot) for less than $200.
Not bad for the well known intermediate flute. It is a nice instrument.

Compared to another one I bought, the Fake Yamaha 271 ($114), brand new Chinese open hole flute, I think they are better instrument.

And there are some more potentially good flutes for sale in eBay.

Having said that, one of the cheapest flute (and Chinese one) I bought is pretty nice and I like it. It's called "Berkley" and I paid only $31 + shipping. :) Unbelievable !
It has engraved lip plate and covered hole model.
it has lovely sound. An excellent value for a BRAND NEW flute when just a new case may cost nearly that much. :D

It it breaks within a few months (although I don't think it would), I can throw it away and keep the case.

I would say there isn't. You can't even get a Pearl student flute for less than $550 USD, and a student yamaha for less than $700USD... Much less their intermediate lines...

Would a Gemeinhardt flute be a good brand?
I've just found a great one.
If it isn't, I suppose I will save up a little longer and buy a pearl
that will last for a long time.

I wanted to suggest the same. Keep your eyes open on eBay or a local shop that sells second-hand flutes. You can be lucky, but of course you have to pay attention. I recently bought a chromatic harmonica on eBay. I didn't want to spend too much money on it. A new one was $225, and I bought it for 46 from somebody who after trying the chromatic decided to go back to the diatonic, so he hardly used it.
Or have a look at the ads (the bulletin board) at your local music school...

I did not buy a flute yet - but I asked my Dad, and he wants
to get me a Yamaha, he says I should get a expensive flute now,
and it will last me through college, cause I am planning to get some
private lessons in college besides my career. So thanks for your help

Hey everyone,

I've decided it's time to buy my flute finally.
After many months of searching, I've decided on a student
Yamaha. Can anyone give me a website (website only!!!)
of a yamaha flute with the lowest price range possible?
I can't afford a flute more than $500 or $600  - so keep that
in mind. Thank you

Here is a reputable dealer here in Saint Louis that has a used Yamaha 225 for $250.

http://www.saxquest.com/productDetails. ... amahaFlute

They have others as well
http://www.saxquest.com/catalog.asp?Cat ... nstruments

Any instrument you get from them is top notch. The techs there are the only ones in town I take my instruments to.

Here is another place I look in on from time to time, but I have never done business with them. They usually have a couple of Yamaha flutes as well.

Thanks Phineas,

Ummmm ....I liked the flutes and LOVED the price - but
I noticed they were used. Is is worth it buying a used flute -
it has already been used for some time - would it wear down
faster than buying a new flute? It would be a waste of money
buying a used flute for $2-400 to just buying a new flute for around
$600. What do you think?

I'll probablystay out of this discussion after this. Even though I know that here and there cheap Chinese flutes that play reasonably (or even wonderfully) well, but they are still too risky for me to put one single dollar toward one. I realize I'm painting with a very, very, broad brush here, but I would stay totally away from any flute that has any connection to China. Remember, it's just an opinion and my own personal rule, but I've talked to enough people whom I trust in the business to form a solid opinion that the risks are just too high; so please save the flame throwing :-). Save up and buy from a vendor in whom you can have absolutely full confidence.

If I had any questions about flute makers, particularly those from China, I would direct them to Carolyn Nussbaum. No, I don't work for her. However, I do know that she keeps up with this business very well and would make an excellent guide, should you ever need one, in choosing a flute tailored to your needs. Her website is www.flute4u.com and you can ask her any question through email at info@flute4u.com. Again, I don't work for her; I'm just a longtime, satisfied, customer who is convinced that she knows her stuff; and she will be absolutely honest with you with whatever advice she may give. I would definitely consult her before I ever purchased another instrument, and trust her wholeheartedly. The only people I trust as much as Carolyn Nussbaum are the people at Brannen Flutes. Both operate at the the absolute highest integrity level I have ever seen in my over 30 years of playing this instrument.
