Hi,

Is the gizmo key ONLY used to play the high C or does it have other uses?

The gizmo isn't used specifically/only for the high C. That's just what it is known for. It is actually used to close the low b tone hole without closing the low C or C# tone holes. This technique is used to control venting in the top register. It can be used on many more notes than the high C.
