Clarinet people? Quick question...

Post by asoalin »

Sorry to post a clarinet question here, but I know some of you are multi-instrument musicians, and I didn't want to have to find and join a clarinet forum for one question.

I am looking to get my mom a basic clarinet to play with. She played in high school and wants to get back into playing. Looking for something inexpensive right now. I found this on craigslist. It doesn't have much of a description (I just emailed the person with some questions), but how does it look to you? Is this the right number of pieces? I don't know the first thing about clarinets, so any insight is welcome. Thanks!!

Sorry for the much delayed reply!

But that's essentially Selmer's beginning clarinet. I've never played one, but if your mom is just getting back in the swing of things it might work for her. If she wants to play in some ensembles though (community bands, etc.), she might can deal with it, but I would want something a little more. I've played on oboes in that same lineup, and wasn't too pleased, and was GLAD to upgrade.

Yamaha horns are said to be pretty good, especially their lower lines, and there are a lot of stencil models as well. I can give you some more info if you're still looking. Feel free to email me!

Thanks for the tips! I didn't end up getting her this one because I suspected that it was a really beginner clarinet (for that price). I ended up getting her a wood (not plastic) clarinet, and I got a super deal on it! I looked up the model, and it was worth 1300 new! Got it for 200! My mom was so shocked. It was great :) :)

Here are some features to look at if you are looking for a quality clarinet:

[*]A bell that isn't chipped or cracked on the inside or outside.
Joints that come together smoothly and completely.
Keys that cover the clarinet holes completely, but without sticking.
A bore, preferably made from wood, that is clean and dry, and smooth. When a musician plays a clarinet, a signicant amount of spittle travels from the mouthpiece and through the bore.

Here are also known clarinet makers: Buffet Crampo, LeBlanc, and Selmer.
