Where do you practice?
Just taking a short break from reading for my environmental sociology midterm and thought I'd do a little forum poll.
Question is....where do you practice flute the most? At home (if so, what room)? At school? At a studio? Outside? Somewhere else? And why do you like to practice where you do?

I practice either in my bedroom or the front room, depending on whether my daughter is asleep! I prefer the front room because the acoustics are better, but the bedroom isn't too bad either. I used to practice in my studio until I moved, so right now it's in the house. When I practice my piccolo, I have to close all the doors so my daughter doesn't come in with a pained look on her face!

I practice at home ... in the living room. I like to practice there because there is 1. a mirror and 2. it's the best place so as to not bother others.

Re: Where do you practice?
It depends on where I am at. If I'm at school, it's the practice rooms. I practically live in them. In fact, I have a key to one I'm in it so much. If I'm at home, it's the music room.
Our music room is in fact our front living room, but considering that there's a book case full of music, my dad's guitars, a hammered dulcimer, two harps, a drum set, my ethnic flute collection, and a 108 year old upright grand piano... it's a music room.

I mostly practice at home, sometimes at the beach with my old flute.
After my initial fears my neighbours would complain (this didn't happen), I feel comfortable here. The beach is nice, but it is difficult to play with the breeze etc., and with people stopping to listen to you...

Re: Where do you practice?
Fluteguy I am so jealous of your music room! When my sister moves out, my mom and I are going to make her room a music room. Mom's piano will be in there as will my flute and piccolo, and hopefully a bookshelf or two for our endless supply of music.
I usually practice in my parents room; they don't mind and it's a big room with awesome acoustics. When they won't let me practice there, I practice in my sisters room. (soon to be music room) At school I'm play in practice rooms or in my assistant band directors office.

Re: Where do you practice?
I made a music room out of my second bedroom, which I don't need anyway.
I have a piano, a keyboard, three guitars, two flutes + many minor instruments.
This room was miraculously spared during a flood upstairs - as the ONLY room.

Re: Where do you practice?
Cflutist's kitchen is bigger than my living-room.
I built a 16' kayak one time in it and had to put it diagonally, where I had to squeeze past one corner to get from the bedrooms to the kitchen.
The two bedrooms in my house have windows that are very close to my neighbor's bedroom windows, so I use the living-room to play. There is quite a distance, and across the street, from the living-room window, to the nearest neighbor in that direction.
When I had a store, a while back now, it had a rather large office that was ideal for practicing in. The person who worked in my store had her own punk rock band and they used that same room to practice in some times. My store was bigger than it needed to be to hold my merchandise, so I built a partition across the middle and built a regular stage in the back half, with enough room left over for a decent sized mosh pit. The back door opening into the alley, which worked as the "club" entrance when we had a show. The band had a devoted following so there was never a shortage of audience. I auditioned for my employee once, and she was decidedly unimpressed, or maybe just saw the incongruity between the genre.
Edit to add info on that band, in case anyone was curious:

Re: Where do you practice?
Anywhere I can find a space, really. I prefer places with great natural accoustics, and they make me very happy, but I'll take whatever I can get.
My maestro once said that a great performance is 25% reading music, 25% watching the director, and 50% flying by the seat of your pants. He was a genius at improvization, so he may have been a bit biased...

Re: Where do you practice?
As a Finn I decided to practice in our sauna, of course:

By its nature sauna is well temperature insulated, so it keeps sound too. I thought one could practice in sauna without disturbing other family members. Unfortunately sauna cabin is quite small so the sound levels appeared to rise too high and I had to come out, eventually.

Re: Where do you practice?
A sauna is not good for a flute. The high humidity levels can cause pads to swell (meaning leaks) and steel rods and screws to rust...

Re: Where do you practice?
Aren't saunas ussually just very warm and dry? I thought it was steam rooms that were the ones that had high humidity? Though I would imagine the high heat (leading to sweat) would be abd for the flute as well. Maybe the room was off?
Re: Where do you practice?
I guess if the sauna is not turned on it wouldn't be a problem, right? Very interesting practice spot!
