Headjoint Re-Sizing

Post by Mandera3 »

Hi!

A couple of years ago i got a new flute and i am very happy with it, but today i was experimenting with my old flute and noticed that my old headjoint was much easier to split the edge because it is a slightly smaller and more oval shaped hole. The only problem is that the head joint from my old flute is too big to fit the body of my new flute. Does anyone know if it is possible to make the two fit?

Most headjoints can be resized within some limitations. A good flute shop can shrink the tenon using a special tenon shrinking tool. Take it in to a flute repair tech and s/he can tell you whether it is possible in the case of your headjoint and flute.

Well said. It's possible. But let a good technician take a look. I've had this done before and it works great.

What do you mean by "split the edge"?

thank you so much for your expertise!

Missy,
I am talking about the air splitting the edge of the embouchure hole. My current headjoint has a bigger hole and therefore i have to really get my air out and down more in order to split the edge at the best angle, but I feel that this takes away some of my flexibility because i have fairly small lips. The embouchure hole on my old head joint is smaller and more oval shaped so I do not need to aim so far out. The better angle that you hit the edge at, clearer the sound will be.
