Post by CLAUDCHICK »

hey!! i was just playing my flute...just like i usually do.
when i took my finger off of the A flat key i heard like a snap. i didnt think
much of it until i noticed the sound wasnt as normal. i lookd at the flute and
noticed the the second pipe. the one that starts right after the C key. I have
been staring at my flute forever and cant seem to figure out what to do. Has

Claudia, can you be more specific as to what
happened to our flute. It seems like some words are missing in your post...
Regardless, it is probably best that you take your flute to a local repair shop
rather than trying to fix it yourself. Flute mechanism is fragile so I would
suggest you seek a professional flute repair shop in your area.

my poor flute took alot of abuse befire my three year old fot a hold of it.... pep band... nuff said... you know, tight quarters hyper teenagers.... stupid bleachers... not to mention one time a bunch of supid kids( i wont even call these tenagers cuz this was childish...) stole my flute from the lockers ( yeah i shold have invested in a lock much sooner) and after me fretting over it three days or so i found it on the destk of my first period class... stuffed full of caramel chocolate ... **cry!!** stuff like that made it where repair people saw alot more of my flute than i like... i was particularly embarassed when one day i was playing and my a flat ke just fell off..(probably a result of said abuse) all this has been fixed...(took forever to get all the caramel out of my keys) so my flute and i have been through alot... now where my child got ahold of it i have a pipe detached and one with at least three bends, bent screws keys literally bent backwards ( well just one i think that can be fixed just taking off that pipe and flipping the key back.) but the pipe thats bent is broken off of two post, the barrel is bent and the springs are a MESS! is it worth even taking it in to see if it can be fixed?

How can a three year old even DO so much damage??? I still cant even figure out how she got the flute **sigh**

It may be worth taking to a good repairman, but don't get your hopes up. If it is fixable, it would probably cost more than it is worth to make it play. It would probably require new parts (which are not cheap), new pads and springs, and a lot of dent work. My guy is fairly cheap, but from the flutes I have taken to him before, I am guessing somewhere around $250 or more. And like I said, my guy is cheap compared to many others!

My suggestion, strip the springs (and other sharp parts) off and let the 3 year old keep it. That way, your child has one to play with when you practice, making it much less likely that he/she will want yours. I gave my best friend's 3 year old a flute for Christmas a few years back. He loved it! Now, her daughter has taken it over. It doesn't play (at all), but it has peeked their curiosity. Who knows, either of them could be a great musician some day :)

It sounds like your Ab key spring might have snapped. Is it loose when you touch it? Those are a relatively cheap fix and it takes less than 30 minutes.
