You don't need them. I don't even know if
they really work. Maybe they do, but your best bet is to just take good care of
your flute to begin with. [:)]

Silver protector strips are essentially
activated charcoal from what I've heard. They absorb tarnish causing gases in
your case to help prevent tarnish from forming. I have a silver protector strip
in my case because my flute does tarnish, but I'm not sure how much difference
it makes. Tarnish really doesn't affect the playability of your flute so its
really just to keep your flute looking pretty. If your flute doesn't have a
problem with tarnish, there is no need for silver protector strips. Many student
and intermediate flutes are plated, even if they are solid silver, to help
prevent tarnish from forming. -Bradford

I saw these in the store recently too and tried
to find out more about them from the manufacturer (3M), without much luck. Since
most flutes sit very tightly in their case, the strip will no doubt touch the
flute. I was trying to find out if having the stip in actual contact with the
flute might damage the finish somehow (a chemical reaction of some sort, who
knows?). Has anyone who has used these stips had any problems like this?

I don't know a whole lot about these strips
except that one came in the case when I purchases my flute. I left in in
figuring it must help at least a little and it does come in contact with the
flute (middle joint) but it was placed by the manufacturer (Gemeinhardt) of the
flute. I haven't seen them in the stores yet so I'm not sure of the cost.

I can't remember how much they were...they
weren't too expensive though. Under $10 for $6 of them, if I recall correctly.

ive tried to find out more about 3M, it
supposedly will not hurt the silver/plating when it touches it directly.

Flutesonline sells them in a package of 3 for
$3.95. I have never used them but I seen them sold at a number of places. I
guess I don't see a real big need for them if you take care of your flute
making sure you wipe it down after playing. Also as someone said...tarnish
doesn't affect the sound. Kim
