miyazawa 602 or Resona 300 for growing student
We are in the process of buying a new flute for my daughter who has been playing my flute for the past several years. We currently have (on trial) the Powell Signature & Conservatory, Resona 300 by Burkart & Miyazawa 602. My daughter is a very strong player with a lot of interest and natural talent.
It is clear that she is much more comfortable and in control when playing the Miyazawa and, therefore, plays it more easily. The Conservatory (clearly my personal favorite if i were choosing a flute for myself) is not a good fit. It seems as if it may be too much flute for her at this time (if that is possible). The Signature seems as if it is not enough flute for her. She seems to over power the flute. The Resona 300 has a beautiful low register but the higher register seems to have a buzzy tendency (moreso when I play it). It is surprising to me that the Resona would be 2nd choice but for the buzzy higher register.
Question: why am I hearing such a buzz? The Resona is closer to our price range...but when I see/hear her play the Miyazawa it seems like a perfect match. Which wold you choose?

I would choose the perfect match. Miyazawa 602 is a beaute instrument. Having said that what are her future considerations eg orchestral playing, college, conservatory plans etc. If so, peeps here would say ask the college professor as some/each have their own preferred brands or sound preferences.

I would go for the perfect match too. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to make up for a bad match between player and instrument. Go for the Miyazawa.

Thank you for the responses. my gut feeling is also to go with the Miyazawa. It is the heavy wall. We tried both MZ 10 & MZ11 head joints. She sounds best with the MZ 11. The MZ 10 seems to frustrate her a bit.
She is currently playing in our local youth orchestra as well as her school band. She hopes to play in the orchestra in college (not sure about marching band yet).
This afternoon we are meeting with her school band director (also a fabulous flute player). Monday we meeting with the man who does all repair work on my flute.
I'm anxious for them to hear her play all the instruments.
Thank you again. I will post once the final decision has been made.

She is very blessed indeed! A heavy wall Miyazawa 602 would be absolutely heaven =) I am so keen to get some feedback on MZ10 and MZ11 headjoint. That's such a personal opinion question that I doubt you'll ever get the kind of information you need. You really have to try them to know if they suit you. A HJ cut doesn't just suit one type of this/that, and another suits this kind... it's a hybrid blend of the players whole facial/cranial structure, how they breathe, how they blow, how they articulate... It's like asking.... Based on hair color, which tastes better? An apple or an orange?

When it comes to choose from a variety of excelent flutes/headjoints it's really confusing.
But the thing is, in my opinion: you felt a buzzing sound at the higher notes because the design of the embouchure (raiser mostly) doesn't fit very well your style of playing and the physiological conformation of your lips and mouth.
Eventually you would be able to resolve this and come up with a clean and beautiful tone.
However, a pretty long way would have to be crossed for you to achieve that. And that means you would have been spending your time doing it.
On the other hand, what you tell about the Miyazawa is that your daughter would not have to do all this work (sometimes fatigating and frustrating...). She is already at a higher level of playing from the beginning with this one. That means also that she will start from there and have all the available time to grow as a flutist, without having to cope with the adjustments needed with a flute that doesn't exactly match.
Without any doubt, go for the Miyazawa!

As of tomorrow, my daughter will be the proud owner of the Miyazawa 602.
She is fortunate to have a dad who respects her talents, even though he may not fully understand why, knows how important this decision is to her.
From what I can tell, the MZ 11 seems to have a larger opening. It does not seem to produce as many high harmonics as the MZ 10. My daughter, as a still developing musician, is able to better controll the dynamics while still getting a nice full & round sound that is pleasing to her.

Sinseh has spoken. But how we (some of us) wish things were more black and white - would certainly help the online shopper (cheaper). Which really is not the ideal avenue for flute buying.
This adds a layer of mystique to the process to find that unique match between man and his equipment (can't say m/c) and the permutations are endless, leading him pm that never ending quest. Ahh the quest... one might even get addicted to it. And after all that, we are told the answer is found within.

The buzzy sound on the resona is most likely the crown. I actually have their heavy silver crown which is less buzzy and is warm but still shimmery. They would probably substitute a heavy crown at no cost they cost the same when they sell them outright.
