Yes, moderators read over the posts to make sure
everything is running smoothly. Chat rooms for instance don't usually have
moderators and people can say anything they want. Moderators check to see if
there is no 'breaking of the rules' like swearing or personal threats. They
also try to keep the thread on track - check out middle age wannabees, the
moderator stepped in there to remind people what the thread was about. THey can
also move posts to a more appropriate forum, delete offensive posts, and even,
as FluteDiddy mentioned remove members if needed. I think the moderators on this
site do a very good job. I was in another forum where they didn't do such a
thourough job and I was so offended by some of the posts I left (eg, swearing,
personal abuse and put downs). Moderators are a good thing in my opinion.[;)]

Moderators do make sure the rules of the board are
followed and do keep order but they also do a lot of behind the scene things
that members don't see. My husband is a mod at another forum. It takes work to
keep a forum up and make sure them members follow the rules. Mods help in ways
that you may not always see...

I moderate my school's website of roughly about
200 members. (Recently promoted to 2nd administrator/head moderator.) Like those
prior to this reply, moderators watch the boards, enforce rules, edit, crop,
prune, delete, and make any necessary changes to ensure and preserve the peace
on the message board. We also approve or disapprove members if the board's
settings are set that way, along with banning, unbanning, warning, etc. Although
moderators seem to have all this 'godly' power over all the members on the
boards, administrators have full authority over everything. In a way, admins can
read everything you have written just be searching your username and pulling up
a whole list of links to every reply, topic, or private message you have made.
(Yes, we can read your private messages.) Moderators are more like the little
worker bees of the admins. They practically deal with the more visible issues on
the boards (posts, etc) while admins take care of the more important issues
(rule violations, etc). You can say it's a hierarchy thing, but in a way, mods
fix up what you can see and admins can fix up things you can't see as well as
everything else that mods can do.

Who is the moderator of this site anyways? I'd
like to thank him for building up this cool site.
