audition to be a student?!

Post by piccylo789 »

I recently asked my high school band director
if he knew of a private teacher who would be good for me. WHen he got back to me
last week he told me of a woman who is supposedly top in the country about an
hour away from my town. He said that she won the international soloist award
three times. He said that he thought I could handle her. He also said that I had
to audition to be her student... my band director says he thinks I should do it
no problem but I''ve never auditioned for anything before. Our band competes
all the time and I''ve never been one to get nervous but I don''t have any
clue what is expected of me... any tips or advice would be great! <<piccy

In this case, it is best to remember that
the audition goes both ways! Everyone has their own style of learning, and even
though she may be an award winning player, her teaching style might not suit
your learning style. At any rate, she should be looking at your potential, so
pick out pieces that you most enjoy playing. Good luck.

I would agree with MattMom If she is as good
as reported she will see your ability and potential without to much preparation
on your part. When you really are an expert at something potential and ability
jump out at you like a flashing red light. I hope it works out for both of you.
Horses for courses and teachers for students. Hope you found a good
fit[]

I agree with Mattmom. Each teachers teaching
style will vary. Remember that she is also auditioning for you in a way. I would
suggest giving her a call and finding out what she requires for an audition. It
may be something as simple as scales and she may just want to hear you play
random things to get a feeling of where you are at skill wise. I would think
that if your band teacher thinks you can handle it you probably can:) Good luck
and let us know how things go and what you find out. Kim

I agree, I think you should call her to find
out what she requires for an audition.. and then prepare like crazy. [:)] Most
teachers will want to hear you play a variety of things, such as scales, a
technical piece (such as an etude), and a lyrical piece to showcase your style.
Maybe also some sightreading.
Cheers,
Emily

I would also call the teacher to see what
she requires for an audition. If she is established as she sounds she probably
does have requirements as to what she wants to hear you do. Fluter

Read the book: The Innner Game of Music By:
Barry Green It talks about not defeating yourself in the tryout by getting
nervous.... You really can do it .... just don't try too hard and enjoy
yourself.... it talks about kind of having faith like a child... you know just
doing what you love because you love it.... do it for you :) I am sure it will
go well [8)]

I'm not familiar with your area, so it's
difficult to say whether or not there are any district honor bands-- you would
have to ask your band director if he/she knows of any. I'm not sure if your
band director is a member of SCSBOA (Southern California School Band and
Orchestra Association) but from an internet search, it looks like the high
school band is a member. SCSBOA does have a very good regional honors band, but
auditions are in the fall. There is also an California All-State band, but
again, the auditions are in the fall and you would have to talk to your director
about obtaining an application. Good luck!
Haha, this one is my favorite:
