Audition Piece

Post by flutopia »

I'm looking for a piece to audition for a symphony orchestra. It needs to be 2-3 minutes long, and relatively advanced. Also, if it is available online (for free, preferably) that would be awesome. Thanks so much :)

Hello there,

Wow, a symphonic orchestra heh? Best find something VERY impressive yes? Right. Down to business. I'm so sorry that no one has replied to this post, and it's a shame. Let's see if you'd like any of the following, and I daresay that these are indeed, the staple diet for every orchestral flautist out there;

• Symphony No.3 in E Flat, Op.55 by Beethoven

Now about this, you mustn't play the WHOLE thing. In fact, I recommend for all of these that you purchase a book of Orchestral Extracts. Off the top of my head, Jeanne Baxtresser's rendition is absolutely brilliant. If you're serious about a solo career, I suggest the purchase of this book.

• Overture, "William Tell" by G. Rossini

• Scherzo, "Midsummer Night's Dream" by Mendelsson

• Carnival of the Animals, "Voliere" by Saint-Saens

• Symphonic Metamorphoses, Paul Hindemith

All of these are also available online, along with the full conductor's scores to help give you the bigger picture, on imslp.com. All of these extracts are indeed technically challenging, but you also must never forget to show off your ability to produce a beautiful tone in all registers and to produce a varied but always clean execution of articulation.

Again, I apologise that no one has bothered to answer this post, and even if you have already auditioned that something I say helps you in even the slightest bit.

Above all, enjoy music and have fun!
