ear plugs

I have ear plugs which I use for piccolo and high, loud
playing on the flute. I think whether you need ear plugs or not really depends
on what your practice space is like. The practice rooms are our school are small
and echo a lot so I use ear plugs there, but I don't need them when I practice
at home in the basement. If you hear your sound as being too loud or have a
slight ringing or buzzing in your ears after you play, you should definitely use
ear plugs. Also, try to distribute high note practice throughout your practice
session so you don't do it for too long at one time. Any other thoughts on
hearing protection and flute?

Well, the flute is not really that loud of an instrument.
Especially compared to Brass and Saxophones. Try playing the drums for
comparison. I think if you really are curious about the level of volume on the
flute, get yourself a decibal meter and check out where you are at and where the
danger levels are. The problem here is tone and registar. Many people have
problems with the higher range of the flute (listeners most of the time)because
of the piercing tone of the higher range. So, I think your problem may lie with
the quality of your tone in the higher range. Maybe you could use ear plugs
until you gain more control of the registar, but then how are you gonna hear
what you are doing??
