Buying a Piccolo

Post by Gkz »

I was looking into buying a piccolo for the next school year; the one I have now is a hybrid of a metal head joint and (I believe) a resin body. It's a PJ Hardy serial #53920. I can't seem to find much information for the model online and I am borrowing it from the school. I have an aunt, however, who is willing to sell me an Armstrong 308, which is all resin. Would it be a 'step up' from the piccolo I have currently? This year every honor band and orchestra I have played in I have been switched to piccolo. I'm going to be in senior high next year, playing in marching season and concert season with this piccolo at my school, and also in a statewide orchestra with this piccolo. Is it worth buying?

It really depends on the cost and the condition. In the ballpark of $1000 you can get a brand new composite Pearl piccolo that is really one of the best in that price range (1200 or less). There are probably some used ones as well. But in the end if you're looking for a genuine step up, you'll be wanting to look at wood piccolos (which would not be appropriate for marching band).
