Hey everybody I haven't been on in quite a while because of school but wanted to say hi during summer vacation.
Never did say anything about the convention last summer but it was awesome! Wish I could go to the one in Chicago this summer but can't afford it right now. I tried a bunch of headjoints at the convention and ended up in love with a wooden one from David Chu made out of tulip wood. If you get a chance to try one of his I highly recommend them! Critics of wooden headjoints say you can't get the color range and volume on them but this one defies that stereotype. Of course it does have the "wooden" sound and you have to like that .... which I do since I love baroque music. The only criticism I could say is that the articulation is soft but that also goes with the type of music, but that could also just be the way I play.
Anyway. I did my junior recital this past March and used the David Chu for all the pieces.I got a standing ovation! Wasnt perfect but I was very happy and can't wait to do my senior this year. I performed the Bach partita, a Haydn London trio with another flute and cello, nightingale serenade, and ended with a very obscure contemporary pieces called hysterical penguins for unaccompanied flute. This piece was written by Roland Chadwick and I discovered it on YouTube. There's only one recording of it and it is so cool! My teacher hadn't heard it before and she and my entire studio fell in love and want to perform it now. I'm looking for more obscure pieces like that so if you know of any please tell me about them.
So I now have a goosman headjoint on layaway with Carolyn Nussbaum because I want to be able to get the more edgy sound that the metal gives. The penguins would've been better with metal I think because of the extended techniques but I was still proud of my performance. My poor original Sankyo headjoint doesn't keep up with me anymore so I had to retire it ..... even brought it out to see if I could use it on the penguins but I've advanced beyond its capabilities so it went back into retirement. Which actually makes me excited because it is an indication of my progress in my playing since I've gone back to school and take lessons every week.
Anyway. That's me in a nutshell for the past year. I'll try to be here during summer.

It's good to see your smiley-face flute here again! Glad to hear everything is going well with your studies! I may have to check out the penguin piece. I like oddball music and that sounds like something I'd enjoy.

Hey y'all! such a nice welcome! I hope y'all listen to the hysterical penguins and let me know what you think. It is SO cool! It goes up to E4!!!!!!!
I ordered "and the strange unknown flowers" today to start working on pieces for my next recital. Thought that one was really neat too. Just hope I can work it up.
