New Yamaha Intermediate Flutes

Post by Shvflutist »

I am just curious if anyone has tried and/or purchased a Yamaha 200, 300, or 400 series intermediate flute since they have been updated. I played a Yamaha YFL-362 flute the other day that was outstanding--probably the best intermediate flute I've ever played. The low notes sounded and projected well; the mid range was beautiful; and the top range was was bright but with a controlled feeling. The flute played very smoothlyI decided to go ahead and order a YFH-462 for the sterling silver headjoint, body, and footjoint. There are a few nice reviews of these flutes online, but they are from Yamaha artists. If anyone has tried one before and has any opinions or impressions, I'd like to hear them. Thank you!

I bought a YFL-517 when I was visiting Tokyo this past February. I chose the 517 because it seemed like the "sweet spot" in the mid-range - not scary expensive, but clearly a quality instrument, hand made in Japan for the Japanese market (not sold in the US AFAIK). It immediately made a very noticeable improvement in my playing (I'm still clearly limited by me rather than the instrument) and I am enjoying it immensely. You didn't say where you are from – I'm from the USA; the strong US dollar made it a bargain for me in Japan (like, roughly half of what a comparable Yamaha 500-series would cost me back home). It was very easy for me to justify - I figured if I hated it, I could probably sell it once I got home and actually make a profit.

I love mine and am sooooo glad I decided to take the chance and buy it (no English spoken in the shop, I don't speak Japanese...an interesting buying experience). I really don't think you can go wrong with these. I bet you will enjoy your new one.

I haven't tried the 462, but my 584 plays like a total dream. Low notes project, good tone, really responsive keywork. I would guess the 462 should play similarly. Post back once you get it, and let us know what you think!

Our shop got a bunch in on clearance. http://stores.ebay.com/quinntheeskimo-V ... maha+flute

They are lovely instruments and so far have been selling briskly. I'm not sure if it was word of mouth or the availability of discounted prices that made them so popular.
