solo suggestions
Hello. I''m looking for a good solo piece to play for
my school concert. I would like a solo that has a piano accompaniment. It
can''t be too long but I want it to be interesting. The level of music i want
would be intermediate-advacned. Thanks!

I really don't know the nature of your concert or the
level of your playing, so I'm just going to throw some things out there. Of
course, I can only speak from my own experience and by no means have I played
everything. Some of my favorite pieces (including to perform) have included:
Concertino by Chaminade Sonata in A major, Faure Suite for Flute and Piano,
Charles-Marie Widor (one of my favorites!!!) Meditation from Thais, Massenet (a
really really good one, especially for weddings!!) Suite, op. 116--Godard Hope
that gives you someplace to start.. probably all of these pieces you can find at
Fluteworld.com. If you have a flute teacher, he/she can also give you some good
ideas. Good luck!

I am currently working on Carl Reinecke's Ballade for
a flute festival...I think it's a very interesting piece.

well, I don't really know what you mean by
intermediate to advanced, but I'll throw some out. Meditation by Thais (I think
someone already said this and it really is a wonderful solo) Badinerie by Bach
Fantasie by Faure (This is one of my favorites!) Concerto in G or D by mozart
(either one is beautiful, but beware, G is harder than D) Menuet from
L'Arlesienne, Suite No. 2 by Bizet (nice, soft piece, but you have to slur up
to high G at pp, and that takes practice) Siciliana and Allegro from Sonata in F
major by handel (this is one of the easier/prettier pieces) Dance of the Blessed
spirits by gluck is also very pretty but it's easy..so those are just some of
the pieces I've had fun with. Good luck! Leanne

Oh nevermind on the easy pieces. You're a good
player. Yeah, I recommend the Faure and the mozart, they're high school grades
four and meditation is grade 3.

Check out Bloch's Suite Modale, and some collections--Flute Music of the Baroque and The Romantic Flute (some of these are transcriptions, since we flutists don't have lots of Romantic literature). These are both published by Hal Leonard.

I find the Telemann Sonata in F really nice. Here is a link for the free PDF file if you want it http://www.musicaviva.com/files/pdf/dow ... pl?id=7355
Does it have to be classical?
Show tunes and standards work out pretty good under those circumstances.
"My Favorite Things" is always a good flute piece to do. It is simple, but goes over very well with a good piano player. If you can learn one of many transcribed jazz solos that are available, that would even make it a bigger smash hit!
"Waltz for Debby" another guaranteed smash. Simple, but gives you a lot of room for self expression.
"Spain by Chic Corea" If you find a good piano player that can pull this off, this is another good one that I have done that brings the house down!
"Conception" Is another great one.
"When I fall in love" This gets me a standing ovation everytime! This is a simple tune, but not everyone can pull this one off! As a matter of fact, I played this tune solo(No piano) at a wedding in Korea and brought the bride to tears!(Have pictures to prove it!)
"Donna Lee" Just check this one out!
"So many Stars" If you can pull this one off, it will bring people to tears.
I can go on and on. Performance is more than just finding the hardest piece to play, but how you perform a piece. Always choose a performance piece based on what you like to play, want to play, and play well. Save the demonstrations for those dreadful auditions!
The fact is "Mary had a little lamb" can get you a standing ovation if you can get your audience to feel it!(That is another story!) In the end every song, tune or piece has its own challenges, no matter how simple the song may seem. A solo shot with a piano player is an exelent opportunity to do this.
I listen and play all kinds of music, and love almost all of it. My goal here is not to steer you away from classical, but to maybe spark some lateral expansion.
What ever you choose to do, just get out there and play the d**n thing!

Hmmm...I'm pretty sure the suite modale is one of the pieces on SmartMusic, but you need a subscription for that. If you don't have one, check with your flute teacher maybe? (It's a great piece by the way, although one of my favorite solos is the 'Danse de la Chevre. Telemann's sonata in F is also nice, although it's much easier.) Have fun!
