Gizmo Key (B Foot Joint)

Post by sakuramimato »

Since I doubted that very many beginners would
start playing the flute with a B foot, when is it necessary to use the gizmo key
on a B foot joint? On which notes, and on which octaves?

Gizmo Key (B Foot Joint)

Post by tarzaflute »

It can be used for a clearer high C, I have
experimented with it a bit and used it for other notes to make them clearer, I
think it was high A flat, u can try and see if it works for u, it worked for me
well, but I've often struggled with that note, if I were to play C or A flat in
a piece, I wouldnt bother with the gizmo key, many for convenience reasons,
unless it was a slower piece, or if I needed to play quieter, I would then, for
C anyway

I use the gizmo when I practice long tones, because it does improve tone quality and decrease resistance on the note, allowing you to hold it longer. However, I'm not sure how much it's worth in performance, since I have yet to encounter passage work in which moving the pinky over to the gizmo is practical. Usually I have to either keep the pinky on the Eb key or just lift it up, like I do for Bb and B right below it.

Oh. I thought it was to make C3 less sharp. I always have trouble getting my pinkie from it to the normal key, so I usually don't use it.
