I''ve just received a new flute for christmas. I love the sound of
it...when I can get a sound out of it. So far I am only able to get a B and an A
but G,F,E,D & C are beyond me. I''m not sure why this is happening. Could it
be improper posture? Embachure? A messed up flute? I just don''t understand
why I can get some notes but not others. Can anyone help? [;)]

It can be any of the above but I doubt that it is the flute since it is
new. You need to find a teacher to show you the flute playing basics or you
might decide to use our video lessons - they deal with all the basics. It is
very hard to tell because there are many aspects involved in playing the flute.
If you are playing in the lower register, then it is normal that it is harder to
play the lower notes and it just takes practice. Best of luck.

Yes! That's it! The lower notes ( or more specifically anything lower
than an A) are impossible! I can hear the tone but it's too airy and whispery
to be called an actual note. However, if I change my embrachure, I can get all
of the high notes with less difficulty. I haven't been able to get the
embrachure that gives me the lower pitch. Is this the range of the flute - the
higher pitch- because the lower ones (the B and the A) sound more rich and full.
So what should I be trying to achieve at first? High, low, or anything that
sounds good?! By the way, thank-you for getting back to me so quickly! I want to
play this instrument, but it's really frustrating right now. Hopefully it will
become more rewarding as opposed to frustrating. A[]

The metal flute is at its best in the middle register (and also most in
tune). Stay between low G and C3 in the beginning and you can expand as you feel
more comfortable in your playing. Just remember to relax your lips as you go
higher in the register and pull them tighter as you go down. Don't worry if it
is not coming out as you would like it. It takes practice and for everybody it
is hard to get a good tone. Tone on the flute is really a life-long quest so do
not get discouraged - it will get better!
