Voice Your Opinion

I was meaning to ask what "level" I played in, as I
have read through the message boards, but decided on asking you to voice your
opinion on what a student playing for four years should have accomplished by
now. - Scales (major and minor, plus octaves and varieties) - Sight Reading -
Notes (which notes should they have been able to play/master) - Tone - Variety -
Dynamics - etc. I might ask what "level" I play in later on, but I would like to
see what you think a person of my "experience" should be performing at. Thank

It is hard to say what level you shoul be playing
at. Different countries seem to have different criteria to be met for each
level. In the state that I live in I rarely even here "level's" mentioned. I
know that my daughter has looked at various lists online and said that her
skills sort of fit in a few different level's. If it helps I and tell you what
she is doing. She is in 7th grade and is in her 3rd year of playing and this is
basically where she is at skill wise : She can play all Major, Minor and
Chromatic scales and arpegios 2 octaves from memory at 144. She can play with
vibrato. She can play out of the book Concert and Contest Collection (Voxman)and
Master Solo's (Sigurdson) with ease. She can play Largo and Allegro by Telemann
in the Master Solo book from memory. She is currently working in the book Flute
Music by French Composers and this gives her a challenge. She is currently
working on Chaminade. She has played picollo for a year. She has a can play
solidly in all registers, has a solid grip on harmonics, double and triple
tongueing. When I order music for her from Fluteworld, I order music that is
rated 3+. I have no idea of what "level" she is playing in. She just keeps
working on building skills and perfecting the ones that she has. She basically
just sets goals for herself...such as she wants to be able to audition early for
the Wind Ensemble in High School. Kim

daughter "YOU GO GURL!" lol. She must really work hard at playing her
instrument. My skill level is significantly lower than hers and I've played
about half as long, though there are students in my band who have been playing
since 4th grade and can't even dream of playing anything - let alone scales -
at 144.

Im a Senior in High School and i admit I am first chair. I have been playing for
8 years, and piccolo for 3. But i would have to say the 7th grade girl is
probably more advaced than i am, sadly. I need some improvement. *walks away

As I said above..she just really sets goals for herself..for example her flute
teacher told her that she would have to have those scales memorized for the Wind
Ensemble, so she just digs her heels in and does it LOL I only wish she would
work so hard on cleaning her bedroom Kim

I hope I didn't offend you or come off that I meant
to brag. I was just trying to tell the original poster what my 7th grader in her
3rd year is doing when she asked what someone playing for 4 years should be
playing. My daughter does spend alot of time practicing as her only extra
curricular activity has been basketball. She tends to be a perfectionist by
nature except as I said when it comes to cleaning her room LOL Kim >>*smiles

hey everyone.. im in 7th grade and i can play: ~a ,a
flat ,b flat, c (3 octaves),d, e, e flat,f, g major scales (all two octaves
except for c) ~f, f sharp, and d minor scales (2 octaves) ~arpeggios for all the
scales listed above all of these above are memorized
