transfer from flute --> piccolo

Post by Hakaru »

I am a decent flute player. I kind of want to try the piccolo. How different is the piccolo when it comes to embochure and breathing? Should i rent a piccolo or buy a really cheap one

The piccolo requires a smaller, tighten embouchure and the air need more focus, I think I can say that you need stronger support. I highly recommend buying one or renting-to-own one. Yamaha piccolos are very good.

The embouchure is similar, but smaller. Technically it is a bit tighter, but I would avoid thinking of it like this as it may get you to tense up too much.

Many people find that piccolos need more air. I don't understand that; personally, I need quite a bit less. However, the air does need to be faster.

If you just want to try one, maybe renting one or even playing on for a few minutes in a store would be fine. If you do want to eventually own one (and keep in mind that flautists are often expected to know how to play one), keep in mind that buying is generally cheaper than renting and then buying (rent-to-own is sometimes an exception). Also, some people feel more comfortable playing an instrument of their very own. If you do buy one, make sure it's a decent one. Sometimes these are quite cheap, and sometimes they're not.

KrazyFlautist, newspaper adds and your local instrument repair shops are a good place to start. :)
