Selmers

Post by Schof »

Do you think Selmers are better or worse than Yamaha flutes?
I used a Selmer for a long time until I had to get it fixed last year. It was taking a long time so I needed to use one of the new Yamahas for class, and I really liked it better. My friend still stands by her Selmer though and sortof thinks it's stupid that I like the Yamaha.
Are Selmers better in the long run? Is it even a very good brand?

They're not a good brand from what I've heard in terms of mechanics and such.

My old student flute is a Selmer. I didn't have that many problems with its mechanics, but the tone SUCKS, the tuning isn't all that, the very high and very low notes are unnecessarily hard, etc.

I've never played on a Yamaha, so I don't know if they're any better or if this is just the lot of the student flute.

It's been my experience that Selmer flutes are usually dawgs! The Yamaha is much more responsive, and the scale's a little more current. :)

i own both. yamahas without a doubt. they're sturdier and ususally have a better sound but its best to try them both out and compare to see what you're more comfortable with.

Okay. When I used a Selmer I thought they were good, mostly because I had just switched off those awful elementary school instruments. It had to be fixed often, but I thougth all flutes had to that much. At least I learned how to handle broken flutes (to an extent).
My friends says her problem with Yamaha is because "Yamaha makes motorcycles". She just doesn't trust it. I dunno, I don't have a problem with her using a Selmer. She just seems to have a problem with me liking Yamaha.

They may make motorcycles, but that doesn't stop them from making excellent musical instruments.

My piccolo is a Yamaha, and it's awesome.
