I think I might have found a good Piccolo. Opinions?

I saw the Emerson P3 model piccolo at wwbw.com and I want the variation that comes with one plastic headjoint and one metal headjoint. It has a conical bore, the body is all plastic with silver-plated keys. The headjoints are cylindrical, though..does that make any difference? If you need to see it, go to

Wow. Nice. Just wondering what that redness is between keys 1 and 2. Playing without a liplate might be hard but very nice. They are all at least $650. Call that low prices?

All conical bore piccolos have cylindrical headjoints, so no worries there.

$650 is a pretty sum, but it's not very expensive for a good picc. The question is if this picc is good, and I'm not qualified to answer that.

I have found that Emerson model 3 piccolos are good middle of the road piccolos, better than some less than others. I would strongly suggest ordering more than one from this particular company and picking the best one. The flutes and piccs that I have ordered from them in the past were not set up as well as they should have been. You can't beat the prices, but I have had some problems. Just a word of caution.

I ordered a flute from there once. It lasted 6 months, lol. Thanks for keeping that in mind for me. I will find a different dealer

Do you have a local music store (within, say, 70 miles or so)? It'd certainly be worth your while to visit one and try as many piccs as they've got, different brands and models. Also, a good dealer will be willing to make a good deal--not bare-bones, I mean, people gotta eat, right? Most will even price-match catalog or internet companies, provided that lowest price isn't below their cost. But, even in my small area, my store can offer substantial discounts to our customers, based on our cost, anyway. Merchants like Woodwind-Brasswind, among others, can offer very low prices because they buy dozens or hundreds of each instrument model from the manufacturer. While a low price is a good thing, don't discount the convenience of being able to take your instrument in for an emergency, close-to-home repair (assuming quality work is available) when necessary. The internet isn't a very warm service rep, lol.
