Composition

Post by Jamie_Babie »

For my music GCSE, i have to compose something. Iwas considering writing a jazzy duet for flute and piano. But does anybody have any tips for writing a jazz piece, ie,which harmonys sound jazzy, which notes to include/avoid, that sort of thing?

Anything would be helpful!

Jazz...it involves knowing classical theory thoroughly as well as knowing jazz theory thoroughly. Although there are numerous good jazz theory books out there, you really need to be playing jazz to absorb the ideas of the genre.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "jazzy". It could mean rhythmically jazzy, or harmonically jazzy. In either case, you probably need to know a little bit about the genre before attempting to write something.
