If your flute works properly (you should have
someone test it), there is no need to buy a new one just because of its age. To
learn to play - you need to get instruction. Our video lessons are very helpful
but it is recommended that you also find a teacher, in-person or at least via
the Internet with one of our teachers. However, if someone in your family plays
the flute, maybe they can teach you and guide you as you are starting. It is
extremely important to learn the basics correctly. Let us know how you are doing
and if you need more help. Best of luck.

I am new to flutes too, i got a tip. Try playing
with just the headjoint. And if flutes run in your family, u have a better
chance of learning it because, you can get help from your family.

I would really suggest a new(or used) flute if
you want to play serious. But IF youve had a flute thats been in your family for
a long time I suggest taking it to get restored. Its very likly that the pads
are very old and screws may be rusted in or stuck, Probably needs replating too.
But I really reccomend just fixing it so all the screws wont get stuck and new
pads it will still have its antique value. And keeping the screws and rods
lighty oiled will make a flute last very long. Without a little oil the screws
have probably already siezed and are stuck. better to loosen and oil sooner than
later so they might not get more stuck with time. AN old looking flute may play
very nice as long as the pads are seating. But for its sentimental value, I
suggest you get a new/used one for playing. Will also be less likly to break or
"disappear" A less valueable flute than your familys.
