I started playing when I was 9 years old....which was 12 years ago. I'm still playing and have nearly finished doing a music degree.
I started the violin when I was 5 so picking up the flute was slightly easier for me coz I already knew the basics of theory and reading music.

I didn't start until I was 14. I'm so happy I did, though!

It is really late at night, and I have nothing to do!

Back to the point...... ahem........ Anyone start learning flute before you were old enough to join the band program in your school system ( example: learning in elementary school like me when I wasn't allowed to play in band until I was in middle school)?

I was the opposite of you . . . I joined late. I started flute the summer before my 9th grade year, and I'm going after a performance major. (I worked my butt off, admittedly.)

But hey, it is a good thing you did, because evidently it makes you happy enough that you want to do it for a career.

I am going for a performance major too (I will be a freshman this fall).

I just really hope that I wont change my mind (something would literally have to pull me away kicking and screaming) because I am a music major on full scholarship, and if I change my major, I lose it.

Yeah, I'm going into my senior year of high school and just starting to check out some schools. It's a rough, rough major . . . but such a sweet, sweet career. Playing your instrument (something fun), and getting paid (something fun)?? Awesome.

I started near the end of 3rd grade, 5 1/2 years ago, because in 4th we were allowed to join band, but my mom playes flute so she got me into it. It was nice to already know some fingerings and such when you first start out
