need advice on selling Haynes flute

Post by MeredithAnee »

I inherited my sister's 1973 Haynes B foot inline G French flute several years ago. I've just had it completely overhauled and am looking to sell it as I don't play the flute--well, my high school Gemeinhardt, but not a Haynes open hole! Any ideas as to how to go about selling it? It's appraised (for insurance purposes) at $10,000. I know the market is "soft" right now, but I'm hopeful of getting $6,500 - $7,500 for it. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

I would check with the Flute Exchange, Fluteworld, Carolyn Nussbaum, or the Flute Center of New York about consignment options. You might also contact high school and university level teachers to see if any students (or perhaps the teachers themselves) are interested. You could also sell on eBay or some other virtual marketplace, but this is a bit risky, particularly on an expensive item like your flute.

Check out www.usedflutes.com. It may be an option for you.

If you go the usedflutes.com route, be sure to set up a junk e-mail account and ask anyone interested to put something specific in the subject line of any e-mail they might send. Usedflutes.com is notorious for the amount of spam users receive, and these procautions will help you sift through it all. And you may want to consider using an escrow service to ensure that you do not get ripped off, as there are also many scammers watching usedflutes for valuable instruments like yours which they can abscond with.
