1) What is your current association with the flute? (prof, hobby, band student, teacher, etc)
I currently play for fun, but I am serious about it when I do play. I play in a community/university band.

2) How many years have you played?
21 year, not continuous. After college, I didn't play much for about 6 years.
I played piccolo for 3 years in marching band 15 years ago. I started playing pic again in January when the band needed someone to play the piccolo solos. I'd only had piccolo parts twice in the past 7 or 8 years. I am now working on taming the little beast.

3) How often and how long do you practice?
On average, 1-2 times per week for approximately an hour. This varies quite a bit depending on upcoming performances, difficultly of music, and what else I've got going on. What's really surprised me is that I've continued to improve (slowly) in spite of not practicing much.

4) Do you play any other instruments?
A little bit of piano.

5) Tell us something non-music related about you?
To pay the bills I'm a statistician. For fun I like to go sea kayaking, hiking, and camping.

1) What is your current association with the flute? (prof, hobby, band student, teacher, etc)
I am the flutist in my church's contemporary service.

2) How many years have you played?
Off and on for 28 years (oooh...that makes me sound OLD!)

3) How often and how long do you practice?
I try to practice at least twice a week for 1/2 hr. - 45 min. but I have 3 children to keep me busy!

4) Do you play any other instruments?
Just the radio...=) I used to play the oboe a little in high school. Couldn't remember a thing about it now, except the reeds are expensive.

5) Tell us something non-music related about you?
I am a photographer.

1) What is your current association with the flute? (prof, hobby, band student, teacher, etc)
Mainly a hobby. I did have an ensemble (flute, violin, viola and cello) that met regularly and performed for weddings and small gigs, but due to various life changes, we've disbanded. We weren't great, but I loved playing with them. If you're curious what we sound like, here's a sample:
Mozart Flute Quartet snippet
I'm seriously considering joining a community wind ensemble this year though because I really miss playing with a group.

2) How many years have you played?
20 years off and on. I played most seriously in highschool and college. It's been about 8 years since I've had regualr lessons though.

3) How often and how long do you practice?
It varies, but I do try to play at least once a week for an hour to keep the chops flexible.

4) Do you play any other instruments?
I play celtic harp frequently. I can play violin and guitar, but I do not consider myself performance level at all. Piano was my first instrument.

5) Tell us something non-music related about you?
My two biggest hobbies are gemstone cutting and jewelry fabrication. I also dance (ballet and belly dancing). I have graduate degrees in mathematics and gemological studies, but to pay the bills I work as a boring computer prgrammer.
I also love cats. :)

1) What is your current association with the flute? (prof, hobby, band student, teacher, etc)
hobby- play with my church choir

2) How many years have you played?
played other woodwinds (alto/tenor/bari sax, alto clarinet, but flute just a little) in gradeschool through HS for 8 years, then took 15 years off. Picked up a flute again last year, as it's a little more conducive to church music than sax.

3) How often and how long do you practice?
3-4 times a week, about 45 - 60 minutes, but I have 2 children to keep me busy, so time is a premium, and I get to practice only during naptime or after their bedtime!

4) Do you play any other instruments?
answered this question above.

5) Tell us something non-music related about you?
I have 2 little boys, 3 1/2 and 1 1/2.

1) What is your current association with the flute? (prof, hobby, band student, teacher, etc)

I am a band student in my highschool's marching and concert band. I am 16 years old...

2) How many years have you played?

I have been playing the flute for 5 years, and the piccolo for the past fuor years.

3) How often and how long do you practice?

4) Do you play any other instruments?

Yes. I play alto saxophone in a jazz group. I have toyed around with clarinet and many other things too, but I don't consider myself any better than our second clarinets

5) Tell us something non-music related about you?

I woke up at 4 AM to make muffins for my best friend (who also plays the flute )!! :D

I'm going to be the best flutist in state! CHA!!

1) What is your current association with the flute? (prof, hobby, band student, teacher, etc)

Principal Flute in the Diablo Valley Philharmonic (college based community orchestra).

Have hosted "Flute Fests" at my house where friends of mine play Flute Choir music (I have an Alto, and friends have Alto, Bass, and ContraBass Flutes)

2) How many years have you played?

1968 - 1974, stopped for 15 years, then 1989 - present, so 23 years.

During my high school years, had a scholarship to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Parents told me to get a "real" job, so earned a BA in Business Information Systems and dropped out of music. Didn't start up again until my now ex-husband was teaching 2 nights a week at our community college, so I joined their band and orchestra.

3) How often and how long do you practice?

Not enough, once or twice a week about an hour each.
Update: now that I have a new headjoint, I try to play at least an hour each night.

4) Do you play any other instruments?

Piccolo, Fife, Irish Flute, piano

5) Tell us something non-music related about you?

Have a Gemologist Diploma from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) but work full time in the IT biz as a software developer.

I enjoy cruise vacations and camping.

no, mostly we keep a watch as the thread progresses. We (or at least in my opinion) seldomly go and pick a thread, and read the whole thing. Most people only keep an eye out for new posts.
