What does "resistance" mean?

No, I've seen the engraving before. The ones I saw had cuts on top of the lipplate right on both sides of the opening. Almost looked like "wings" on the side, like the hole was flying .... wow, didn't know I could be poetic! It looks neat, but I wondered if there was a reason for that cutting, if it does something to help with tone or somesuch.
